A Heart Most Certain

27066707Lydia King knows exactly what it feels like to be in need. Her mother’s poor health and father’s despicable spending habits are putting them on the edge. With her cap set for a politician she is sent by her possible future mother-in-law to gather donations from Nicholas Lowe, who is notorious for not donating a cent to the Teaville Moral Society’s efforts. Determined to prove to  that she has what it takes to be the wife of the old lady’s son she sets off to get Lowe to donate – and it takes her another direction entirely.

Melissa Jagears always posses a brilliant talent with the pen and this was another fantastic read from her. I’ve read her mail-order bride stories and thought if this one was half as good as those it was going to be well worth staying up all night trying to finish the story. And you know what? It really was!

No Other Will Do

27066694Emma Chandler is different. There’s no denying that. But it’s gotten her to where she is now and there’s no denying that either. But sometimes you’ve got to bend just a little and let compromise sort out the more sticky situations. That’s why, despite her stance on males, Emma must enlist the help of Malachi Shaw to help bail her community out of something.

If Karen Whitmeyer’s stories didn’t have that dash of humor in them I would consider them just like all the other Christian Romance books out there. But the humor makes it something else altogether and I love it. I enjoyed this story as much as I did her others. History and wit. It starts off a little slow but after you get past that you’ll be engulfed by the story of the characters.

A Haven on Orchard Lane

cover83817-mediumSome things are just best left alone. For Charlotte Ward, that rings even truer after a rather messy jumpstart for her acting career. When her daughter comes into her life to help the mother who has been pretty much absent in her life, a learning experience begins.

I’ve read only one title by Lawana Blackwell (that I recall) and it’s been awhile but I do remember enjoying the book. So with that in mind I dove into this title with high hopes. I wasn’t disappointed. This author has a great talent with words and the ability to weave a story. Plus it’s history. Win-win. With emotion and surprises you’ll be turning the pages of this one well into the night. Good read.

Fireproof

p182002_d_v8_aaA failing marriage. Two broken souls. And a test for the ages.

Soooooo, I’ve heard a lot about this movie. And we’re talking a lot. But the story itself didn’t really seem like something I would enjoy or have any interest in since 1) it wasn’t set in some way-back-when time period and 2) what do I know about marriages? Well. That was just crazy reasoning because this was both an incredibly moving and very well thought out teaching tool. When the opening scene was showing I was still skeptical, I thought, oh gosh. Here’s your run-of-the-mill soap opera. But it was definitely more than that. It’s not perfect, but nothing is. If you were/are like me and never really cared to give this movie a go I’d say ditch those doubts and dive in. This one is not to be missed.

A Daring Sacrifice

25280316Juliana Wessex was once like the people she now robs. Once. But that is now in the past and her current life is the one she chooses to lead. But when she robs the wrong person her mysterious identity as a bandit is unveiled. And so begins an adventure that will take her down roads she never thought existed.

It’s very interesting to see books like A Daring Sacrifice coming available to young adult readers. Pretty sure I would have enjoyed this title a great deal. It’s still an interesting story for older readers, don’t get me wrong. While not a favorite book, I did still find it a good book and easy to read. I would absolutely LOVE to see more Christian historical fiction stories for the younger readers – educating and entertaining (‘cuz we’re all about the logical ’round here) and having experienced writers like Jody Hedlund is a great start.

The Magnolia Duchess

25795364Fiona Lanier’s family is no friend to the British. With her very own brother locked up as a prisoner-of-war who could blame them? When a childhood acquaintance washes up, literally, on local shores Fiona determines to hide his nationality. Conveniently easy as it is since he has no recollection of who he is, where he’s at, or even who Fiona is. But as time goes by it becomes a little more difficult and if they don’t tread carefully the unlikely duo will be forced to confront reality.

Soooooo, I absolutely loved book one and book two in this series, and while The Magnolia Duchess wasn’t horrible I didn’t feel that it wads up to par with it’s big sisters. The connection I had with the previous two heroines wasn’t extended to Fiona. As you all now, I LOVE being very attached to the main characters, but it just wasn’t happening here. It’s a neat plot and a great time period, but unfortunately this just wasn’t my cup of tea. Is it worth a read? Heck, yeah. So if you’re considering it I would still dive in.

Counted with the Stars

25822042Kiya’s future was bright. She had grown up in a well-to-do family and she was promised to her fiance who likewise had a bright future. But when financial difficulties slam her family full force Kiya’s father sells her into slavery to appease he creditor. Forced into the service of a woman who despises her and her family, Kiya deals with misery on a number of fronts while hoping that some day her fiance will return for her. Then come the plagues. At times there are things worse than death.

Counted with the Stars was a phenomenal story. I was glued to the pages from the very beginning and didn’t put it down until I had finished. I have never read a story that was based around biblical stories and can I just say this was a truly wonderful introduction into that realm. If you haven’t read this story – well, you’re missing out. Filled with action and plenty of lessons this is one not to be missed.
